What your clothes are actually made of: a fabric guide for considered buyers

The fabric landscape in 2026

If you have ever stood in a changing room, checked a label, and wondered what the fibre actually is, you are in good company. Brands are required to list fibre content, but nothing obliges them to explain what those fibres mean for the woman wearing the garment. The result is a row of acronyms and percentages that say very little about how a piece will feel, perform, or age.

This guide is here to change that. Not to tell you what to buy, but to give you what you need to decide for yourself.

Natural fibres: the originals

Cotton

Cotton is the world's most used natural fibre and the baseline most of us measure comfort against. It breathes well and feels soft against the skin. Its weaknesses are that it creases easily, dries slowly, and loses shape over time. Organic cotton answers concerns about pesticide use, but it does not change how the fibre itself performs.

Merino

Merino is not the scratchy wool of an earlier era. Fine-gauge merino, particularly from New Zealand, where breeding programmes have focused on fibre diameter for decades, is soft enough to wear against the skin. It is naturally breathable and temperature regulating, naturally odour resistant, and good at managing moisture, and it has a natural elasticity that helps a garment hold its line. The trade-off is that merino asks for a little more care than a synthetic, though it is happy in the machine: wash cold, dry flat, away from direct heat.

Linen

Linen is made from flax and prized for breathability in warm weather. It softens with washing and has a drape many women love. It also creases freely, which is either part of its charm or its chief drawback, depending on your tolerance.

Silk

Silk drapes beautifully, has a natural lustre, and is surprisingly strong. It is also delicate, costly, and usually asks for dry cleaning, which limits how often it earns a place in an everyday wardrobe.

Semi-synthetic fibres: the middle ground

Viscose and rayon

Viscose, also called rayon, is made from wood pulp, typically beech, eucalyptus, or bamboo. It has a soft hand and drapes well, but generic viscose production uses harsh chemistry, and the fabric tends to shrink in the wash and weaken when wet.

EcoVero Luxury Jersey

EcoVero is a more responsibly made viscose. By the Higg MSI, it is produced with up to 50% less water and carbon emissions versus generic viscose, and the fibres are certified biodegradable in soil, freshwater, and marine environments by TUV Austria. That biodegradability is a property of the fibre, not a promise about a finished garment. The wood comes from FSC or PEFC certified forests, and the fabric carries the EU Ecolabel. It feels close to a fine viscose, with the same fluid drape.

Lyocell and Tencel

Lyocell, branded Tencel by Lenzing, is produced in a closed-loop system that recovers most of its solvent. It is soft, drapes well, and manages moisture nicely. It costs more than generic viscose and is the more considered choice of the two.

Synthetic fibres: the engineered options

Polyester

Polyester dominates global production because it is inexpensive, hard-wearing, and versatile. It resists creasing and holds its shape. Its drawbacks are poor breathability, a tendency to hold odour, microplastic shedding in the wash, and a petroleum feedstock. Recycled polyester answers the feedstock question but not the microplastic one.

Nylon

Nylon is stronger than polyester and drapes better. It turns up in hosiery, activewear, and outerwear. Like polyester, it is petroleum derived and sheds microplastics in the wash.

Performance jerseys: where engineering meets comfort

"Jersey" describes a knitting technique, not a fibre. A jersey can be knitted from cotton, wool, a synthetic, or a blend. What separates a performance jersey from a basic one is the quality of the yarn, the density of the knit, and the finishing.

Microjersey is a densely knitted Italian fabric, milled by Eurojersey under the Sensitive Fabrics name, that uses a fine-gauge yarn. The "micro" refers to the gauge of the knit, not the fibre content. By Eurojersey's own testing, Microjersey requires no ironing, offers maximum resistance to pilling, retains its shape after repeated washing, and is up to three times more durable than cotton. The result is a fabric with the comfort of jersey and the structure usually associated with woven cloth.

What to look for on the label

Beyond fibre content, a few practical indicators are worth a glance:

  • Weight: measured in GSM (grams per square metre). A higher GSM generally means a more substantial fabric that drapes and lasts well.
  • Care instructions: a machine-washable garment gets worn more often, which improves its cost per wear.
  • Country of manufacture: not a guarantee of quality, but a useful data point.
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX (tested for harmful substances), GOTS (organic textiles), or the EU Ecolabel (lower environmental impact).

The best fabric for you depends on how you live, how you care for your clothes, and what you value. There is no single right answer, but there is always a more informed one.
